Detail pack fitted.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePrototype History: D2282 was destined to have short life. She out-shopped from Drewrys Hither Green Factory in February 1960. Allocated to Brighton Depot from new. She stayed working around the depot until May 1966 when she moved to Ipswich Depot for working the yards and Docks. She remained in Suffolk until May of 1968 when made the short hop down to Colchester depot. Here she would stay until withdrawal in December 1970. She was scrapped in 1972, and never gained a TOPS 04 classification.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile not a poor design within the context of the modernisation plan diesels. The majority of 04s would have short lives with BR. The Gardener Engines where always considered to lack reliability, and at just 204HP with a mechanical drive, the locos lacked the operational flexibility of the of the larger, more numerous and more powerful Class 08 and 09. One saving grace for the 04s there 25mph top speed and relatively light weight making the good locos for shot trip workings and P-way, as well tramway routes. However as the BR network shrank during the 1960s and freight moved to the roads. Work dried up and many of the class would be cut up by the early 1970s. However some did find there way into private industry. Ford Motor company had a few for working in there Dagenham site and some went to the National Coal Board.
