43154 was a LMS design by Henry Ivatt, built in 1951 by British Railways, at the former LNER Factory at Doncaster, and allocated new to former M&GNJR at Melton Constable in Norfolk.
The Ivatt 4MT became synonymous with the former M&GNJR in its final decade. Following the LNERs full take over of the M&GN network after buying out the LMS in 1936, the LNER moved quickly (if hampered by WW2) to removed the mostly Midland Railway design loco fleet. To replace them, the LNER brought in many ex GER, GNR and GCR designs to fill the gaps in motive power. However many of these were also life expired and would really struggle with the heavy summer holiday trains as well cause maintenance issues owing to the sheer mix of designs requiring attention. To remedy the issue, BR Eastern Region would again look to Midland region derived locos. Over 50 of the 162 Ivatt 4MTs would make their way to East Anglia. With them being allocated to Peterborough, South Lynn, Melton Constable and Great Yarmouth Beach Depots. The Crews on the M&GN called the locos allocated there ‘Fargos’ after the Western Film, Wells Fargo. This was due to there rather American styling, such as the high running boards and exposed pipework. The locos where very popular with crews in Norfolk and where most definitely not referred to as “Pigs”. The Fargos would all eventually migrate back into the Midland Region following the closure of the majority of the M&GN in March 1959. Sadly only one Ivatt 4MT survived into preservation. 43106 which was a former South Lynn loco is not awaiting overhaul at the Severn Valley Railway.
