The model it’s self is in excellent condition. The base loco is quite a simple model, for instance, the model lacks spring buffers and decorated cab.

History: 71000 was a one of kind loco built by British Rail to the Design or Robert Riddles. She was built to replace Ex LMS Princess Royal (Turbo Motive) No.46202 “Princess Anne” after she was destroyed in the October 1952 Harrow & Wealdstone disaster. Duke of Gloucester’s design was innovative. She was feature many labour saving systems such as Automatic Coal Trimming, Self Cleaning Smoke Box, Roller Bearings.

The loco was a 3 cylinder design, and was to be fitted with Capriotti Valve Gear and Kylchap Exhaust to maximise steaming. However. Due to cost savings at Swindon works drawing office during the build of loco in 1954, she was fitted with a standard bifurcated double blast pipe. Unfortunately this compromise on the design lead to 71000 being a very poor steamer. She was never popular with Crews. She was such a problematic loco during her BR service she was often kept at Crewe as the spare engine, so to avoid using her. She was withdrawn in 1962. One of her cylinders was donated to the science museum, and the rest of the loco was sent for scrapping at Woodham Brothers scrapyard on Barry Island.

Fortunately 71000 was lucky to end up at Barry. She was one of the 213 loco’s rescued from the site. Purchased in 1974, by the Duke of Gloucester Steam Locomotive Trust. They set out on a 13 year restoration and modification program, which included fitting the Kylchap exhaust and modifications to fire grate which had been removed from the design when the loco was built. 71000 has gone on to be become an excellent performing loco, and has in preservation met performance figure she never obtained during service. 71000 is about to complete a overhaul, and will be hauling rail tours on the mainline in the near feature.
