Runs quite well. Capable of scale speed of 348mph. Great little loco for kiddy.

History:
The GWR 101 was a class of one and working prototype. Designed by Legendary locomotives designer G. J Churchward. Built in 1902, 101 started its short life as an Oil Burning loco to test the feasibility of using oil over coal. The burning equipment was of the design of Richard Holden of Great Eastern Railway. 101, like many of the GER Locos running on oil at the same time, wasnt an efficient steamer. The loco however, proved the while oil could be used, and that locos designed from the onset to be oil burners worked better than converting locos from coal. It was very expensive to run and the technology needed further improvement before it could be rolled out in mass. Added to this, In 1902 the oil for burning was not something easy or cheap to obtain in Britain, meanwhile high quilts coal was cheap and plentiful. A Lesson the Royal Navy would find out ten years later with the Queen Elizabeth and R Class Battleships. 101 was converted to Coal in 1905. It was intended that loco would go and work on Wrington Vale Light Railway, however being a class of one and due to the conversion to coal hadn’t improved the steaming quality’s of the loco, she was used as a Swindon Works shunter until she the boiler was life expired in 1911. She was scrapped that year.

How’ve, the loco would live on. Hornby would use the class as a design basis for there entry level 0-4-0. The loco has appeared in many many different livery over the years. However, this version is most accurate to the prototype. Displaying her 1906 - 1911 livery and number.
