65356 was one of the 1888 batch of Y14s built for the Great Eastern Railway. The class would be built in 27 batches from 1883 to 1913, to a design of Thomas Worsdell. A total of 259 of the class would be built. They were initially designed to work on coal trains that originated in Yorkshire, but there light axel load and relatively long ranges meant the class quickly came to be used as a mixed traffic design all over the Great Eastern Railway Network. Over the years these flexible locos would also be used in France during WW1 and outside of the former GER network. The design didn’t change much over the very long production cycles. However there were some changes made to the design. Many of the class were not fitted with Westinghouse Airbrakes and designated for freight only. There were also changes to the cab sides. There were also design changes to the firebox, chimneys boiler pressure and wheels. Locos produced before the 1891 batch came with unbalanced cast wheels. The LNER would take just over 200 of the class into stock on the grouping of 1923. All be 1 of the 43 locos that went to France in WW1 where withdrawn and scrapped prior to grouping. The LNER would make the largest changes to design. Changing the cab roof, height, changes to safety valves and smoke box. The LNER would also fit some of the class with Steam Ejectors for Vacuum brakes, and steam heating during the 1930s so they could be used to on passenger services, and as carriage warmers.
65356 was built at Stratford works in January 1888 carrying the number 532. She was one of the freight only unbalanced Y14s. Not a great deal is written about the locos service life with GER, other than she wasn’t one of the locos that went to war. 1923 the LNER changed the class number from Y14 to J15. She became 7532 by the LNER in 1924. In February 1933 the loco would be fitted with steam Ejectors. Likely for use on Passenger services the Essex branches. During the 1946 renumbering the LNER changes her number to 5356. Unlike many of the class, she does appear to have actually worn her 1946 number in service. Upon nationalisation on January the 1st 1948, she bacame 65356 and was one of 127 of class to pass into British Railways ownership. 65356 was allocated to Cambridge depot upon nationalisation. In December 1951 the loco was moved to March Depot in Cambridgeshire. She would remain allocated there until her withdrawal in April 1957. She was scrapped a months later after 69 years of service. Only one of the J15 class as Serviced into preservation, 1912 built example BR No.65462 which is currently awaiting an overhaul at the North Norfolk Railway.
